Later Hater: Matt Leinart Definitely Still Hates Ken Whisenhunt
Matt Leinart has made it clear over the last few years that he is no fan of Ken Whisenhunt, so it's no surprise that the was quick to remind everyone of his criticisms of his former head coach when the news hit that Whisenhunt had been fired by the Tennessee Titans as of Tuesday morning.
And if we're being fair he did kinda call it last year when he exchanged the following tweets with Fox Sports colleague Clay Travis", stating that he believed Whisenhunt would be done "in a year or two."
Bitter or not, Leinart wasn't wrong. After it was announced early Tuesday morning that Whisenhunt had been fired he took to social media to remind everyone that he called it and that he definitely still harbors a grudge.
Of course he didn't exactly go out on a limb with the prediction, considering Whisenhunt and the Titans went on to finish last season with a 2-14 record and are 1-6 this season even after securing shiny, new first overall draft pick, Marcus Mariota.
The "Karma" comment - among others - is preseumably in reference to Whisenhunt's lack of overall believe in Leinart when he was the backup quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals; and it's the most recent of many statements he has made to that effect since his NFL career fizzled out and he has turned to broadcasting and dating my lowkey girl crush, Josie Loren.
During his time under Whisenhunt in Arizona, the former Heisman Trophy winner backed up Kurt Warner for four seasons. After Warner retired, it was assumed that Leinart was next in line for the starting position. Instead, Whisenhunt went with free agent Derek Anderson. Leinart left the Cardinals for the Texans and eventually spent his final NFL season with the Raiders. He started just one game after leaving Arizona.
After Whisenhunt was hired by the Titans, Leinart had some less than flattering things to say about his former coach while appearing on Fox Sports Live.
“I don’t think it’s a great fit, and I don’t think it’s great timing, and here’s why. You look at his tenure in Arizona — only two years, he had success, and in those two years, Kurt Warner ran that football team — I was a part of it.
“Every single Monday, Kurt Warner would come in an implement 20-to-30 new plays which he would say ‘I want these in my game plan.’ We became a spread offense and we became Kurt Warner’s offense. Then Kurt Warner retires, they go 5-11 twice and they go 8-8...The Tennessee Titans do not have a quarterback right now.”
Well now the Titans do have a quarterback, but he's young and green and Whisenhunt will not get the chance to develop him. Perhaps Leinart is right about that the fact that the Whiz isn't the right guy to bring up young, new quarterbacks. If that's the case, there are very few places for him to land that will be the right fit in the future.
Maybe now that his head coaching days are behind him, at least for this season, he can focus on honing his skills as America's best Bill Cowher impersonator.
No seriously, here's a collage of the two. #Twinning
