Saturday Afternoon Roundup: A Cole Hamels No-Hitter, WNBA And Soccer
Phillies ace Cole Hamels threw a no-hitter at Wrigley Field on Saturday, helping his team to a 5-0 win over the Cubs and undoubtedly increasing his trade value all in one fell swoop. Rumors about Hamels being traded have been swirling since before the season began but have been heating up even more recently as contending teams set their sights on the postseason.
With the trade deadline under a week away it's very possible that Hamels' no-hitter was his swansong. It would be a fitting goodbye to Philadelphia, where he has played all ten of his major league seasons and earned the MVP in the 2008 World Series in which the Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games.
Watch the team and even the Wrigley fans celebrate as Hamels' clinched probably one of the best-timed no-hitters ever.
The USA lost the third place game in the CONCACAF Gold Cup to Panama, who earned the hard fought win with a final score of 3-2 after defeating the U.S. in penalty kicks. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation with the lone goals for each team coming in the second half. Panama was the first to draw blood as Roberto Nurse beat American defender John Brooks to score in the 55th minute on a shot to the far post.
Just fifteen minutes later at 70' Clint Dempsey - who has been red hot in this Gold Cup for the USA - scored the equalizer on a superb cross from DeAndre Yedlin.
Despite getting things going in the second half, both teams began to fatigue and could not make anything happen in 30 minutes of overtime. In the penalty shootout, Aron Johansson and Dempsey respectively would keep pace with Panama as they scored the first two kicks. Fabian Johnson missed the third kick for the USA, but was bailed out by USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan's ensuing save on the third Panama shot.
Unfortunately that's where the luck ran out for the USA. Panama goalkeeper Luis Meija went on to save the shot by Michael Bradley but Guzan was unable to do the same against Harold Cummings, who put Panama ahead. With a chance at a possibly game-saving shot, DeMarcus Beasley's shot for the USA was saved by Meija and Panama won without having to take their final shot.
The WNBA All-Star game was a thriller, with reigning league MVP Maya Moore scoring a record 30 points to the lead the West to a 117-112 win over the East. The West trailed by one point with two minutes left in the game but that's when Moore kicked into high gear, scoring eight straight points and then hitting a deep three-pointer to ensure the victory. Her 30 points surpassed the 29 points by Shoni Schimmel in the 2014 All-Star Game, earning Moore the game MVP.
Connecticut Sun guard Alex Bentley was the surprise leading scorer for the East, coming off the bench and delivering 23 points along with 5 assists.

Man U vs. Barca
Across the country, Manchester United and Barcelona played a friendly at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara as part of the International Champions Cup. Manchester United won the match 3-1 on goals from Wayne Rooney at 8', Jesse Lindgard at 65' and Adnan Januzaj at 90'. Rooney's early goal broke his eight match scoring drought and swung momentum in in Man U's favor early on. Their defense held up throughout the game, allowing Barcelona's one and only goal in the 90th minute; a tricky left-footed volley by Rafinha.
Check out each of the goals in the match.
