That Was Fast: Tiger’s Former Caddie, Steve Williams, Wants To Write A Memoir
Steve Williams got a lot out of caddying for Tiger Woods for over a decade. He was a part of far more wins than most caddies will ever experience, he got to work with a guy who, at his peak, probably played the game better than it had ever been played before, and he made quite the nice chunk of change along the way. Apparently, though, he wants more - almost as soon as Williams' split with Tiger was announced, the caddie announced his plans to write a book about his own career, once it ends.
This book won't be all about Tiger, mind you: according to Williams, his time carrying Tiger's bag "will just be one of those interesting chapters." We're thinking, though, that there won't be quite the same interest in Williams' work with Adam Scott, and seeing as how the announcement of this book-to-be just happened to come right as his professional relationship with Tiger ended, Williams undoubtedly sees this too. (Apparently, he'll be able to write about Tiger because he never had to sign a confidentiality agreement - which surprised us, but hey, he knows what he had to do better than we do.)
Not everyone thinks this such a wise move. Kevin Blackistone, for instance, thinks Williams ought to be grateful that he had a 12-year run that would surpass the wildest dreams of pretty much anyone who's ever done what he does for a living, and leave it at that. Hard to argue that. But we also wonder how wise a decision this is for Williams because...how many people will still be interested in these Tiger details (and there's no guarantee he has anything especially juicy) when he actually gets around to writing this book? Sure, the Tiger-Williams split is news now, but (presumably) several years from now? We're not so sure, and that's why this comes off as little more than a desperate attempt by Williams to keep his name in the spotlight while he still can.
