The Queen, Defeated: The Final Point Of Marion Bartoli’s Wimbledon Upset Of Serena Williams
Despite a highly tenacious comeback bid from the defending Wimbledon champion, 9th-seeded Marion Bartoli defeated 7th-seeded Serena Williams on Court One this morning, 6-3, 7-6 (6). It took a lot of screeching, and a second set tiebreaker, but in the end, Bartoli held off our emotional favorite.
It was the first time Serena lost at the All England Club since the 2008 final, and ended her bid at winning a third straight Wimbledon after coming back from surgery on a blood clot in her lungs.
Bartoli, meanwhile, actually banished her parents from the court after losing the first set against Flavia Pennetta on Saturday. There was no such blowup against Serena, as the Bartolis watched nervously from the stands as their daughter defeated the champ.
