WATCH: 3-on-3 NHL Overtime Is Here, And It Is Spectacular
Shootouts are SO 2005!
In an effort to cut down on the glorified skills competition that ends tied National Hockey League games, A.K.A. the shootout, the League has introduced 3-on-3 overtime to game, and we witnessed our first glimpse of the action on Thursday night, when the season debut between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Philadelphia Flyers went to an extra session.
The debut hero for Tampa Bay's on-ice trio was Jason Garrison, making his sophomore season debut for the Bolts. In 70 games for the defending Eastern Conference Champions last season, Garrison tallied just four goals. However, he matched half of that total on Thursday night in front of a home crowd in Tampa, who went wild when he put a breakaway shot past Steve Mason in a 3-2 victory.
Less than 24 hours after Garrison's shot went into the net to give Tampa the win, Patrick Kane became the 2nd player to earn the honor of the 3-on-3 winner, with his tally giving Tampa Bay's rival in last year's Stanley Cup Final, the Chicago Blackhawks a 3-2 win to spoil the New York Islanders' debut at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
