Watch An Attempt At Showboating Go Horribly Wrong
After scoring a goal to put Manchester United up 1-0 in a friendly over the Los Angeles Galaxy, Mario Balotelli wanted to have some fun. So instead of just kicking in what appeared to be a no-brainer opportunity to put his team up 2-0 in the 32nd minute, Balotelli spun around for a heel kick... only to see the ball go sailing out of bounds.
Balotelli was immediately pulled from the game by manager Roberto Mancini, and he stayed in the locker room for the entirety of the second half. Despite the gaffe, Mancini said that yesterday's benching was punishment enough for the 20-year-old.
"Mario is young, I want to help him and that is the end of it," Mancini said after Manchester City won 7-6 on penalties. "To take him off after 30 minutes is enough punishment. It won't have been easy for him but it has to be a lesson."
Balotelli's flashy attempt is eerily similar to that of United Arab Emirates winger Theyab Awana, except for the fact that Awana's heel kick went in.
