‘We Lahv You! We Lahv You Forever And Ever!’ Mexican Announcer’s Reaction To USMNT’s Last Second Win Is Priceless
As reported last night, the United States beat Panama, 3-2, in the final CONCACAF World Cup qualifier. For Mexico, USMNT's come-from-behind victory was huge: they needed Panama to lose to keep their own World Cup hopes alive. Since Mexico and the U.S. played their matches at the same time last night, the drama unfolded in real time -- and, as always, a Spanish-speaking announcer gave us a live call for the ages.
On the left is the U.S. versus Panama, the right is Mexico versus Costa Rica. The madness starts around the 0:10 mark, when Graham Zusi put home the equalizer in stoppage time (for the non-soccer-savvy, that's the extra few minutes tacked on to the end of the game to make up for the fact that the clock never stops):
"Goal Estados Unidos! We lahv you! We lahv you forever and ever! God bless America!" Then the part with "Ustedes no!" over and over? He's actually laying into the Mexican team pretty hard for failing to compete. Someone on reddit did a rough translation, if you're interested.
As you can see, soccer (futbol) is a big deal in Mexico. I guess we can now pretend the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo never happened?
