Week 5 Injury Updates And Game Day Inactives
Welcome to the Sunday game day edition of The Xpert Eye, where we will list all of the injured players that are game day decisions and post the inactive lists for all the teams as they become available. For those of you awaiting word on particular players, check back frequently, as this article is a live blog that will be updated regularly throughout the morning. There will also be a mid-afternoon update listing the inactive players for the late afternoon games.
Previously Listed as Out
Joique Bell, DeAngelo Williams, Cecil Shorts, Ryan Mathews, Carson Palmer, Donnie Avery, Mike Evans, Mark Ingram, Marqise Lee
Game Time Decisions
Golden Tate – With Joique Bell out and Calvin Johnson hurting, the Lions need Tate on the field. He appeared on the injury report Thursday with a hamstring problem but is expected to play.
Calvin Johnson – Johnson missed all but Friday’s practice this week, but we’ve seen him do that before and still play. He’s likely to be limited and used as a decoy even if he does play. NFL Hall of Famer and FNTSY Sports Network analyst Chris Doleman recommends benching Johnson today if you have another viable option. Johnson needs another week to heal before he can run his usual crisp routes.
Andre Johnson – Johnson only practiced on a limited basis once this week but he is expected to play. If you have other options it might be a good idea to go with it and bench Johnson today.
Tavon Austin – Austin has a knee problem but is expected to play.
Josh McCown – McCown is still dealing with a thumb injury and is doubtful to play.
Arian Foster – Foster practiced on a limited basis all week and it looks like he’ll play. He should get his usual workload so Alfred Blue won’t be worth starting if Foster plays.
Jonathan Stewart – He’s doubtful to play and you don’t want him starting for your Fantasy team even if he does.
According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press – “Calvin Johnson did everything today in pre-game warmups and showed no sign of a limp heading into the locker room.” The Lions website is also reporting that Johnson will be “more than a decoy.” This certainly puts a different spin on things, so we are going to recommend that you go ahead and start Johnson based on this latest news.
Lions Inactives - QB Kellen Moore, RB Joique Bell, RB Theo Riddick, TE Joseph Fauria, DE Larry Webster, LB Travis Lewis, CB Cassius Vaughn
Joique Bell’s presence here is no surprise. We’re expecting Reggie Bush to be the bell cow today and carry the full workload of the backfield. Note that Calvin Johnson doesn’t appear here, nor does Golden Tate, who should have a big game today if Megatron is indeed mostly used as a decoy and draws his usual double coverage. Tate has WR1 upside today.
Giants Inactives - WR Julian Talley, T Charles Brown, T James Brewer, G Adam Snyder, DE Kerry Wynn, DT Jay Bromley, LB Jon Beason.
The big surprise is that Odell Beckham Jr. is making his NFL debut. Don’t expect much, though, as he will be on a snap count.
Vernon Davis is very unlikely to play today.
Buccaneers Inactives - QB Josh McCown, WR Mike Evans, T Kevin Pamphile, G Kadeem Edwards, DE Larry English, LB Mason Foster, S Dashon Goldson.
Josh McCown’s injury won’t require surgery but it may be some time before he starts again. The loss of Mike Evans should clear the way for Vincent Jackson to have a big game. Louis Murphy will also see a fair number of targets, making him a viable flex option in deeper leagues.
Bills Inactives - RB Bryce Brown, WR Marcus Easley, G Chris Williams, OL Cyrus Kouandjio, DT Kyle Williams, LB Nigel Bradham, CB Ross Cockrell
Falcons Inactives - QB Sean Renfree, WR Harry Douglas, T Cameron Bradfield, G Justin Blalock, DL Cliff Matthews, LB Tyler Starr, CB Javier Arenas
Devin Hester could see a few extra targets this week with Harry Douglas sidelined.
Steelers Inactives - QB Landry Jones, WR Martavis Bryant, G Chris Hubbard, OL Wesley Johnson, DL Daniel McCullers, LB Ryan Shazier, CB Ike Taylor
Ravens Inactives - WR Michael Campanaro, TE Phillip Supernaw, T Eugene Monroe, G John Urschel, DE Chris Canty, DL Timmy Jernigan, LB Arthur Brown
Jaguars Inactives - WR Cecil Shorts, WR Marqise Lee, WR Tavarres King, T Josh Wells, G Tyler Shatley, LB Jeremiah George, CB Dwayne Gratz
The Jaguars will look to Allen Hurns and especially Allen Robinson to handle most of the receiving duties this week. Don’t be surprised if Clay Harbor sees extra action as Blake Bortles’ safety blanket.
Cowboys Inactives - QB Dustin Vaughan, T Donald Hawkins, DE Lavar Edwards, DT Davon Coleman, DT Ken Bishop, LB Bruce Carter, LB Korey Toomer
Texans Inactives - QB Tom Savage, WR DeVier Posey, T Jeff Adams, OLB Jadeveon Clowney, CB A.J. Bouye, CB Darryl Morris, S Eddie Pleasant
As expected, Arian Foster will play today. The team is expected to lean on him early to see how he responds. If you have other options you should consider them, as it’s tough to have faith in Foster, who clearly isn’t 100 percent healthy yet.
Titans Inactives - QB Zach Mettenberger, WR Kris Durham, TE Taylor Thompson, T Byron Stingily, DL DaQuan Jones, LB James Anderson, CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson
Eagles Inactives - QB Matt Barkley, WR Jeff Maehl, C Jason Kelce, OL Dennis Kelly, DE Taylor Hart, LB Mychal Kendricks, DB Jaylen Watkins
Bears Inactives - T Jermon Bushrod, T Charles Leno, Jr., C Roberto Garza, DT Jeremiah Ratliff, LB Shea McClellin, CB Sherrick McManis, S Ahmad Dixon
Panthers Inactives - QB Joe Webb, RB DeAngelo Williams, RB Jonathan Stewart, TE Richie Brockel, G Andrew Norwell, LB D.J. Smith, S Tre Boston
As expected, Carolina will be going with Darrin Reaves as their starting running back, though it is possible we’ll see some Fozzy Whittaker and/or Tauren Poole. Regardless of who totes the rock for the Panthers, you want nothing to do with it.
Browns Inactives - RB Glenn Winston, WR Rodney Smith, TE Gerell Robinson, DL John Hughes, DL Ish Kitchen, DB Pierre Desir, DB Robert Nelson
Colts Inactives - T Jamon Meredith, T/G Jack Mewhort, C/G Khaled Holmes, DT Kelcy Quarles, DT Arthur Jones, LB Chris Carter, CB Jalil Brown
Saints Inactives - RB Mark Ingram, FB Erik Lorig, WR Joe Morgan, WR Nick Toon, DT Brandon Deaderick, LB Ronald Powell, S Jairus Byrd
No surprise here. Khiry Robinson is expected to be the primary ball carrier with Pierre Thomas being used mostly in pass situations.
Rams Inactives - QB Case Keenum, RB Tre Mason, WR Chris Givens, G/C Barrett Jones, CB Trumaine Johnson, S Maurice Alexander, DB Brandon McGee
We’ll be back for an update prior to the late afternoon slate of games, mainly looking for the last word on Vernon Davis, who is not expected to play, and Eric Decker, who is a game time decision as of last report.
Here’s the update for the late Sunday games.
Broncos Inactives - WR Cody Latimer, RB C.J. Anderson, DB David Bruton, LB Lerentee McCray, DT Mitch Unrein, OT Michael Schofield, G Ben Garland
Cardinals Inactives - QB Carson Palmer, RB Marion Grice, TE Darren Fells, LB Desmond Bishop, LB Thomas Keiser, LB Glenn Carson, DT Bruce Gaston
No surprise that Carson Palmer is out. He was given a rare nerve injury diagnosis but that doesn’t change the fact that he can’t throw. It may be a while before he returns but nobody really knows for sure whether it’ll be a week, a month or several months. Regardless of how long he’s out, Drew Stanton will be the Cardinals QB.
Chargers Inactives - RB Ryan Mathews, WR Dontrelle Inman, G Rich Ohrnberger, LB Manti Te'o, LB Reggie Walker, LB Jeremiah Attaochu, CB Shareece Wright
Donald Brown will again be the workhorse in the backfield, but don’t expect the Chargers to run more than they have to in order to keep the Jets defense honest. The Jets run defense is very stout but their pass defense is most definitely not, so Philip Rivers should be able to carve up the secondary as long as his offensive line can protect him from the pass rush.
49ers Inactives - TE Vernon Davis, QB Josh Johnson, WR Quinton Patton, CB Tramaine Brock, C Marcus Martin, DT Tank Carradine, T Anthony Davis
As expected, Vernon Davis will not play today. Stevie Johnson could be the beneficiary of Davis’ absence but don’t be surprised if TE Derek Carrier emerges as an option in the red zone against a Chiefs defense that has allowed four TDs to tight ends this season; only three teams have allowed more TDs by tight ends.
Chiefs Inactives - QB Aaron Murray, WR Donnie Avery, WR Albert Wilson, S Eric Berry, DL Damion Square, OL Eric Kush, OL Larry Duvernay-Tardif
Donnie Avery shares the lead with Travis Kelce for targets among Chiefs receivers; both have 24 through four games. Kelce could be in for a tough day, though, as only one team (Rams, 127 yds.) has allowed fewer than the 49ers (136 yards) to tight ends. One would think Dwayne Bowe might step up his game in Avery’s absence but you can’t count on that happening and shouldn’t expect it. One thing you can expect is another big day from the Chiefs running back corps of Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis.
Jets Inactives - WR Eric Decker, WR Chris Owusu, NT Kendrick Ellis, LB A.J. Edds, T.J. Barnes, OT Ben Ijalana, G Dakota Dozier
Team Green is going to have a tough day against a surprisingly good Chargers defense without their best receiver on the field. Jeremy Kerley instantly becomes the top target but Jace Amaro could see a bump in targets as well.
