Wladimir Klitschko Once Inquired About The Cost Of Don King’s Mother
In today's LA Times, Bill Dwyer tells us something that we already know: the Klitschko brothers will never, ever fight each other. This isn't news, nor is the $100 million payday that notorious boxing promoter Don King offered them for such a fight. But the one thing we do glean from Dwyer's sit down with Wladimir Klitschko was the response that he gave to King after getting the offer:
"My reaction was, how much is your mother worth?"
Ballsy, considering that Klitschko said this to someone who once killed a guy, and an interesting hypothetical, since most indications are that Don King would sell his mom for far less than market value.
We've known for awhile that Wladimir and Vitali would never fight each other, because they won't even spar: the last time they did was two years ago, and Wladimir broke his leg, so they've decided to not even do that. Plus, the July 13th death of their father puts an emotional seal on the whole thing. No fight, not ever.
And, really, a Klitschko-on-Klitschko fight only benefits boxing's matchup-starved heavyweight division, and not the brothers themselves. Vitali, the WBC champion, will take on Tomasz Adamek of Poland on Sept. 10, and despite the stadium they're fighting in not yet being completed, all of the tickets have been sold out. Klitschko will fight someone (he's not yet sure who,) in November or December, and regardless of the opponent people will watch. After all, he and his brother are the only game in town.
