The map below is designed as a US sports betting tracker across each state in the United States. Each state has been bucketed into a unique category: Legal Betting, Recent Betting Bill Passed, Betting Bill Introduced, or No Betting Bill Introduced. Additionally, we will also be tracking key concepts such as whether land-based betting, on-site mobile betting or state-wide mobile betting is available.

Legal Sports Betting States

New Jersey

Legal : Yes

Legal Mobile : Yes

New Jersey was at the forefront of the legal sports betting movement and features fully legal sports wagering for both land-based and mobile businesses. New Jersey launched sports betting in 2018 and its close proximity to New York (where sports betting is not yet legal) quickly lead to it becoming the pre-eminent state in the sports betting space. New Jersey features a competitive market already with dozens of operators and has processed nearly $400M in wagers during one of its largest months.

West Virginia

West Virginia launched legal sports betting on September 1st, 2018 and became the 5th state to offer legal wagering. West Virginia features land-based and mobile wagering options from a variety of operators.

 

Rhode Island

Key Sportsbook Operators: William Hill / Caesars, Twin River Casino (Lincoln), Twin River Casino (Tiverton)

Rhode Island was the 8th state to offering legal sports betting and in March of 2019 passed a bill allowing for mobile sports betting statewide. While the mobile wagering has not yet gone live it is expected to launch in 2019 and allow customers to wager on their phones at leading sportsbook operators. Rhode Island features restrictive competition rules run by the state and lottery and the only operators are currently via the casinos. It is yet to be seen if the introduction of mobile wagering will bring other partners to the space.

 

Nevada

Key Sportsbook Operators: Westgate, Wynn Las Vegas, Stations Casinos, Cantor Gaming (CG Technologies), Caesars, MGM, William Hill / Caesars, Boyd Gaming, South Point, Treasure Island

Nevada legalized sports betting in 1949 and has long been a travel destination for gamblers and sports bettors alike. Long the ONLY place in the US you could bet on sports legally, Las Vegas now features competition from a number of states in the sports betting environment.

 

Pennsylvania

Legal : Yes

Legal Mobile : Yes

Key Sportsbook Operators: Fanduel, William Hill / Caesars, Rush Street Interactive, Kambi, Sugarhouse, Parx, Caesars, Penn National

Pennsylvania legalized sports betting in 2017 and after seeing limited growth compared to New Jersey recently passed a bill which should make mobile sports betting legal in the Spring of 2019. Because Pennsylvania sports betting started as a land-based operation, most of the casinos currently run sports wagering with a selection of operators the partner with them.

 

Mississippi

Key Sportsbook Operators:  Ameristar Casino Hotel, Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, Bok Homa Casino, Boomtown Casino, Commercial Casino, Fitz Casino Hotel – Sportsbook, Gold Strike Casino Resort, Golden Moon Hotel & Casino at Pearl River Resort, Golden Nugget, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Harlow’s Casino Resort, Harrah’s Gulf Coast, Hollywood Casino Gulf Coast, Hollywood Casino Tunica, Horseshoe Casino & Hotel, IP Casino Resort Spa, Island View Casino Resort, Magnolia Bluffs Casino, Palace Casino Resort, Pearl River Resort, Riverwalk Casino and Hotel, Sam’s Town, Scarlett Pearl Casino Resort, Silver Slipper Casino, Silver Star Casino, Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel, Tribal Casinos, WaterView Casino and Hotel .

Mississippi passed legal sports betting in 2018 for its land-based casinos making it one of the early states to legalize sports betting in the United States. Mississippi’s current laws allow for legal mobile sports betting but limit the mobile sports betting to on-site within the confounds of a casino. Any legal gaming operator in Mississippi can offer sports betting and there are more than a dozen operators in the state.

 

Delaware

Legal Mobile : No

Key Sportsbook Operators: Delaware Park, Dover Downs, Harrington Raceway

Delaware was the first state outside of Nevada to launch legal sports betting and is operated through the Delaware Lottery. Delaware operates traditional single-game sports betting and also features a parlay card sports lottery system that has been in place since 2009.

 

New Mexico

Key Sportsbook Operators: Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel, US Bookmaking

New Mexico was the 6th state to offering legal sports betting and currently only offers mobile sports betting on-site at the Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel.

 

Montana

Legal : Yes

Legal Mobile : On-Site Mobile Betting

Key Sportsbook Operators: To be determined

Montana passed laws legalizing sports betting in May of 2019, with the Montana Lottery overseeing a system of wagering that will include both kiosks and mobile wagering. The mobile wagering in Montana will require the user to be on-site within a licensed property.

 

Washington DC

Washington DC has passed a bill legalizing sports betting through the DC Lottery and will partner with Intralot as their vendor for mobile wagering. There will also be physical retail sportsbooks in the DC area.

 

Tennessee

Tennessee has legalized mobile sports wagering and is one of the first states to take not just a mobile first – but a mobile exclusive – stance on sports betting. Sports betting in Tennessee is expected to go live over the summer prior to the NFL season.

 

Indiana

Iowa

Iowa has legalized sports wagering including full mobile betting, although the mobile betting is expected to be delayed.

 

Illinois

While the Illinois sports betting bill has not been signed into law legislation has been passed and legalization is imminent. Illinois will operate both physical and online sportsbooks, initially operated via the racetracks in the state. Illinois’ bill initially has blocked other operators in the state including Fanduel and DraftKings.

 

New Hampshire

New Hampshire took a unique approach to launching sports betting with a mobile-only partnership with DraftKings.

Colorado

Colorado launched with a competitive market place and regulations that made it appealing for many operators to get up and running quickly. A 10 percent tax rate made it appealing for a variety of operators including land-based casinos, mobile-only channels and support for a variety of betting markets. Since the legalization of sports betting, Colorado has driven the 6th highest betting handle in the United States.

Oregon

Much like Delaware and Washington DC, Oregon launched sports betting in partnership with the lottery. The lack of a competitive marketplace has hurt Oregon which (along with DC and Delaware) has driven among the lowest betting handle in the United States.

New York

While legal sports betting at land-based casinos has been available since 2019, New York has still failed to roll out mobile wagering which has stunted growth of the sports betting market. Recent legislation passed should provide online operators market access in early 2022.
