This just in: the Albuquerque Isoptoes are renaming themselves the Green Chile Cheeseburgers, apparently for just one day. Personally I’m against this, because I don’t want anything distracting George R.R. Martin from finishing Book 6 of Game of Thrones (he lives in Albuquerque). And this will surely do it.

Of course teams in the minors are desperate for any gimmick to keep the turnstiles moving, and one of their most popular commodities is off-the-wall, affordable food. Also, New Mexico residents put green chile on everything. So hey, why not on their hats?
It’s becoming a trend. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have bacon hats, and the Fresno Grizzlies are rocking taco logos this season (see below). And of course there’s also established team names like the Montgomery Biscuits, New Orleans Babycakes (changed from Zephyrs last year), Savannah Bananas, and the Jacksonville Jumbo ShrimpM (formerly the Jacksonville Suns).

There was significant fan backlash when the Zephyrs switched to the Babycakes in 2016, so Albuquerque figured they’d take it down a notch and just make this a temporary move. But those jerseys and toy green chiles will be on sale at the stadium all season, and that’s what really matters.
