Are the Jets About to Bring in the Clowns?
Some guys fantasize about twins. I get it, I’ve been there. Heck, when I was younger, I didn’t go to the bathroom when M*A*S*H went to commercial just in case a Double Mint Gum Commercial aired. Sure it seems corny now, but when I was 18-years old, it didn't take much… So when I got in my car early Friday afternoon and flipped on ESPN NY radio as Mike Lupica & Don La Greca were fantasizing about twins, I was all ears… Unfortunately after about 10 seconds I discovered that they were talking about Rex Ryan hiring Rob Ryan as the Jets defensive coordinator.
Is that even a thought? Could they possibly do that? The Daily News is reporting that the Chiefs requested permission to interview assistant head coach/linebackers coach, Bob Sutton, for a position on Andy Reid's staff. It’s unclear whether Sutton was granted permission to interview or not, or whether he has in fact already interviewed, but if Sutton leaves, that leaves either Jets defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman or Rob Ryan as the likely candidates. Hopefully an additional report from the Daily News of the Jets being interested in hiring Dennis Thurman is true, because bringing in Rex's brother would be a disaster...
Despite what you may have heard, the Jets just rid themselves of “the rat”, former defensive coordinator Mike Pettine because he was the source of all the leaking to Daily News’ beat reporter Manish Mehta this past season. Pettine has since taken the defensive coordinator job with the AFC East rival the Buffalo Bills. Hiring Thurman makes sense, but what exactly would the theory be behind hiring Rob Ryan? To make sure the circus tour travels the league again in 2013? Are the Jets going to get rid of Tim Tebow only to bring in a true clown?
Can you imagine the NY Jets CBS game telecast with both Rob and Rex Ryan on the sidelines? The camera would be on Rob and Rex constantly to the point where announcers would have to announce descriptively as if they were doing a radio broadcast just so the viewer could find out what’s actually happening on the field. You think that A.J. MacCarron and Barrett Jones going at each other on the field made for interesting TV? What do you think will happen when Rob Ryan calls a zone blitz having one of the linemen dropping off into coverage when Rex doesn’t want it? Rex will probably run over and pull Rob’s hair. Rob will push back and then they’ll brawl. I can see it now… Belly bumping, cursing, arms flailing... It would be a Family Guy special!
Just because they used to ride motorcycles with each other when they were younger doesn’t mean they can coach on the same staff. Woody might as well bring in their papa, Buddy Ryan, as the GM and make it a true three-ring circus. Heck, Buddy is only going to be 82-years old next month. The old man probably has a few years in him. At least he can verbally abuse the two of them in an effort to break up fights on the sidelines…
When we last heard from Rob Ryan it was Tuesday and he proclaimed that he was only going to be out of work for 5-minutes. It’s now been considerably longer than that. Don’t think for a moment that if Rex thinks his brother won’t get a job on one of the new staffs being put together that he’s going to leave him unemployed.
I had a buddy of mine tell me that I was overacting to all of this this and that it would not be a circus. I thought about it for a moment and told him that he was correct, it wouldn’t be a circus. It would be more like a zoo…
