It’s Not Easy Being Green
Is this rock bottom? Have New York Jets fans now seen the worst? Is this capitulation? Only time will tell but one thing is for sure, there has never been a team that sucked so much that has garnered so much press. At 4-7 and as irrelevant as any NFL team in the league, the Jets continue to make headlines. Today’s topic however is just too good to pass up and falls under the category of, “you just can’t make this stuff up.”
On Friday I had mentioned that I had witnessed the Thanksgiving Day Massacre at MetLife Stadium in person where pointed out a number of things that happened at the stadium that were noteworthy. One of the things that’s I didn’t mention was that Fireman Ed (you know, the "J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets" guy) left at halftime. All around the stadium people were saying, “Fireman Ed left, Fireman Ed left, he’s making a statement that fans aren’t going to take this anymore, let’s leave too.” Then after the game we found out that Ed deleted his twitter account too. “Wow, this guy is serious,” I thought. He’s really trying to make a statement.
As it turns out, Fireman Ed wasn’t making any statement at all; he simply left the game because people were heckling him. Ed Anzalone a.k.a. “Fireman Ed” who is most recognized wearing Bruce Harper’s old #42 jersey, has been wearing a #6 Mark Sanchez of late to support his team’s quarterback who has come under fire (no pun intended...); but he simply couldn’t taking the mocking by fellow Jets fans…
In a self-written column in the Metro, a free newspaper handed out in NY, Anzalone announced he will no longer attend games as "Fireman Ed."
This is an indication of how society has lost and is continuing to lose respect for one another," Anzalone wrote. "… The fact that I chose to wear a Mark Sanchez jersey this year and that fans think I am on the payroll – which is an outright lie – have made these confrontations more frequent. Whether it's in the stands, the bathroom or the parking lot, these confrontations are happening on a consistent basis.”
You just can’t make this stuff up. Anzalone quit a job that he he didn't have! He wasn't being paid by the Jets... This really isn’t much different than when Kramer was fired from a job where he wasn’t employed...
Without Ed spelling out the team name now, I’m not sure how fans in sections 219 and 342 are going to be able to spell “Jets.” They’ve had a rough time getting it down and Fireman Ed had been a big help. I know they’ve been practicing hard and they have the “J-E-T” part down, but that last letter has been troublesome for quite some time. This latest turn of events will be a setback. But hey, they are Jets fans, they'll get through it.
