MLB Rule Change: Interpreters Allowed on the Field?
Did you see the new rule about to be passed in MLB whereby interpreters will be able to make mound trips with managers and pitching coaches this year? Baseball owners approved the rule change when they met last week in Paradise Valley, Ariz. The change, which would be used to assist pitchers not fluent in English, now goes to the players' association, which also must approve it for the change to start this year.
I don’t get it? Why don’t they just take advantage of technology and use Siri? The coach can just go out to the mound with their iPhone or iPad and Siri will translate for them. Think about how much money each club would save! They wouldn't have to put an interpreter on the payroll and they wouldn't have to pay for his airfare, hotel, food and beverage during road trips. And teams who need more than one interpreter would save even more...
Take a look at the examples below. I tried it myself and it works perfect...
Example #1 - Translation to Spanish
This guy is three for thee with three home runs against you. Either you suck or this guy is awesome. Either way I’m not taking any chances. Just walk him on four pitches.
Spanish Translation - Este tipo es tres para ti con tres jonrones en su contra. Ya sea que usted chupar o este tipo es increíble. De cualquier manera no estoy tomando ningún riesgo. Sólo a caminar en cuatro lanzamientos.
Example #2 - Translation to Japanese
If this guy ends up getting on base I'm pulling you from the fucking game. So don't walk him, but don't give him anything good to hit.
Japanese Translation - まで、私はクソゲームからあなたを引っ張っているベースに乗って、この男は終わっている場合。だから彼を歩かないけど、彼にヒットする良い何かを与えることはありません。
Example #3 - Translation to Chinese
Throw over to first base, he’s getting too big of a lead and our catcher throws like Piazza.
Chinese Translation - 扔在一壘，他變得過於龐大的領先和我們的捕手拋出像廣場。
Example #4 - Translation to Korean
That fat little umpire is squeezing you back there. Hit him in the balls with the next pitch. Then, maybe we'll start getting some calls.
Korean Translation - 그 뚱뚱한 약간의 심판이 다시 거기를 잡고 있습니다. 다음 피치로 공을 때려. 그럼, 우리는 전화를 받고 시작합니다.
Example #5 - Translation to Indonesian
Our short stop sucks. He can’t catch a cold. Make this rat bastard hit the ball in the air.
Indonesian Translation - Berhenti pendek kami menyebalkan. Dia tidak bisa masuk angin. Jadikan ini bajingan tikus memukul bola di udara.
Example #6 - Translation to Vietnamese
Calm down, I know you are pitching well. I only came out to the mound because I had to get out of the dugout. The bat boy farted and I just couldn’t stay in there any more.
Vietnamese Translation- Bình tĩnh lại, tôi biết bạn đang bày tốt. Tôi chỉ được nói ra gò bởi vì tôi đã có được ra khỏi hầm trú ẩn các. Cậu bé bat xì hơi và tôi chỉ có thể ở trong đó nữa.
It works for virtually any language you can think of...
The rule apparently doesn't mention anything about position players, so if the manager calls timeout and wants to go talk to the left fielder, I wonder if the interpreter will be allowed to trot out there with him? Or he can just let Siri take care of it....
