Course: Corales Puntacana Resort & Club
Course Stats: Par 72 – 7,600-7700 yards
Handicapping The Course
This course used to host a Korn Ferry event was then turned into an alternate field event in 2018 and 2019. Now, it’s in the normal rotation of courses. This course is relatively easy and shouldn’t give the players much trouble unless the wind starts to pick up.
Historically, this course has played as a birdie fest with the winners in 2019 and 2018, both hitting -18. Since there are no Strokes Gained data for this venue, I’ll be sticking to the basics in the metrics I weigh for this event.
Key metrics: Strokes Gained: Approach, Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, Birdies or Better Gained, Par-5 Efficiency.
Horse for the Course
With limited events at this course, I’m not sure we’ll have a true horse for the course, but Sam Burns (+1400) finished 12th here in 2019. More importantly, he’ll enter this event in tremendous form, making six of his last seven cuts — including four top-25 finishes.
Burns checks most of the boxes in the metrics I am looking at, ranking 13th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, third in Par-5 Efficiency, and sixth in Birdies or Better Gained over his last 36 rounds.
Patrick Rodgers is listed at +4800 at FanDuel Sportsbook, and if this tournament turns into a putting contest, few golfers can match Rodgers since he ranks ninth in Strokes Gained: Putting. Given this course is a lengthy 7,600ish yards, Rodgers’ distance should bode well for him as he ranks 16th in driving distance and 20th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee.
If longshots are your thing, Beau Hossler is listed at +10000. He has nearly the same skillset as Rodgers. Hossler ranks 14th in driving distance, 44th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, and seventh in Strokes Gained: Putting.
I was able to bet Luke List at +6600 earlier in the week, but in this field, he’s still a value at +4000.
List’s putting will always be an issue, but he’s one of the best golfers in the field with his irons and off the tee. Over his last 36 rounds, List ranks 15th in Strokes Gained: Approach and sixth in Strokes Gained: Approach.
Asking for List’s putter to show up is a big ask since he’s lost two or more strokes putting in four-straight events, but he’s been stellar tee-to-green in those tournaments, gaining six or more strokes in two of them. Overall, he ranks second in this field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green.
If his putting is close to neutral this week, and his solid ball-striking continues, he has the potential to contend in this field.
