NFL Free Agency 101
NFL Free Agency
NFL Free Agency is a period in the National Football League (NFL) calendar during which teams can sign new players who are not under contract with any team. It typically marks the beginning of the league's offseason and is crucial for roster building.
NFL Free Agency Tampering Period
A few days before the start of free agency, there's a "legal tampering" window during which teams can legally negotiate with the agents of pending unrestricted free agents. However, contracts can only be officially signed once free agency begins.
NFL Unrestricted Free Agent
Unrestricted free agents are players who have completed their contracts and can sign with any team. They have at least four accrued seasons in the league.
NFL Restricted Free Agent
Restricted free agents are players with three accrued seasons. Their current team can offer them a qualifying offer (a one-year contract), which gives the team the right to match any offer sheet the player signs with another team or receive compensation, such as draft picks.
NFL Exclusive Rights Free Agent
Exclusive-rights free agents are players with two or fewer accrued seasons who have received a qualifying offer from their team. They cannot negotiate with other teams.
NFL Franchise Tag
The NFL Franchise Tag is a tool teams use to retain a key player for another season. It is part of the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and is intended to help teams keep a top free agent for at least one more year, providing the team and player more time to negotiate a long-term contract if desired.
NFL Salary Cap
The NFL Salary Cap limits the amount of money that NFL teams can spend on player salaries. It's a critical component of the league's collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with its players. It is designed to promote competitive balance among the teams by ensuring that no single team can outspend others significantly on player talent.
NFL Guaranteed Money
In the NFL, "guaranteed money" refers to the portion of a player's contract that is assured to be paid regardless of unavoidable circumstances such as injury, release, or performance. Unlike other major sports leagues, NFL contracts are notorious for not being fully guaranteed, making the guaranteed portions of the contracts significant to players.
NFL Signing Bonuses
This is a lump sum paid to a player upon signing a contract. It's prorated for the salary cap over the contract's life but is fully guaranteed to the player immediately.
