Belgium Tournament Analysis
You’ll be hellbent to find another squad in this year’s EURO that is under more pressure to perform than Group B’s Belgium. EURO 2020 may be the last hoorah for this golden generation of talent from the Belgians. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Thibaut Courtois, and Eden Hazard on the wrong side of 30, there is not much time left to win a major trophy for this group.
Belgium has an incredible level of talent and composure that has helped them rise to the number one FIFA World Ranking over the past few years. Their manager, Roberto Martinez, sets them up in an aggressive 3-4-3 but likes to sit deep when they are in defense by dropping their outside midfielders into deeper-lying positions. They are spearheaded in the attack by Romelu Lukaku, one of the top strikers in European soccer who is listed at the second shortest odds to be the top scorer at this competition, per the FanDuel Sportsbook.
Kevin De Bruyne will play as a free-roam, creative midfielder who can spark an attack and change a game on his own. His ability to create, score, and hold possession makes him one of the best midfielders in this tournament. With forward Dries Mertens and midfielder Youri Tielemans joining Lukaku and De Bruyne in attack, Belgium can quickly become a handful for even the world’s best backlines.
Although, the worry for Belgium may come from their own backline. Long-time center back pairing Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have both shown signs of aging in the past few years and have certainly lost a step since EURO 2016. This will likely be the weakness in the side but may force the attack to score more goals to ensure positive results at each step of the competition if the defense underperforms.
Group B also looks to be one of the easier groupings in the competition. Belgium should have zero concern in making it out of here and may be able to rack up three or four against Finland, who will be participating in their first-ever EURO tournament, and against downward trending Russia, who Belgium notched seven against across two matches in 2019.
Take Belgium to get over 9.5 goals and tally it up in a relatively easy Group B as they could slot seven or eight before a knockout match even takes place.
The Bet: Over 9.5 (-110)
