Week 2 College Football Best Bets
With some of the Power 5 teams kicking off this week, it’s fair to say that college football is officially back! Let’s look at some games that will draw attention to some big bets for the week. All odds are brought to you by Fan Duel.
UAB Blazers at Miami Hurricanes
Odds: Hurricanes -14.5, over/under 54.5
Thursday night’s game will feature the debut of Miami quarterback D’Eriq King. If you have never seen the Houston transfer play, then you are in for a treat because he is as electric as they come on the field. In 2018 when King was the quarterback for Houston, the Cougars hit the over in 69% of their games.
This will also feature the debut of Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee who came over from SMU. While at SMU last year, the Mustangs were the best team in the country in covering the over 77% of the time. Lastly, UAB is coming off a week-one victory over Central Arkansas, where their defense allowed 35 points to the Bears. You can expect a lot of points being scored in this one.
In terms of the game itself, looking at ESPN’s “Returning Production” chart, UAB returns 81% of its production, ranking as the eighth-most in college football. On the flip side, Miami returns only 55% of its production, which ranks 97th. It will be interesting to see how the Hurricanes adjust to all the new faces while UAB has already had a game under its belt while returning to that production.
Syracuse Orange at North Carolina Tar Heels
Odds: Tar Heels -23.5, over/under 65.5
What a story it has been in Chapel Hill with Mack Brown returning to North Carolina and immediately turning the program around. The 18th ranked Tar Heels were a pretty good team in 2019 at home ATS with a 4-2 record.
On the other slide, Syracuse is coming off a disappointing 5-7 season and ranked as one of the worst teams as a road underdog going only 1-4 ATS. UNC returns sophomore stud Sam Howell and 87% of its offensive production from last year, ranking as the ninth-most in the country.
Howell is coming off a true freshman season where he threw for over 3,600 yards with 38 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions. He was third-team all ACC, ACC Rookie of the year, and a consensus freshman All-American.
They will be going up against a Syracuse defense who only returns 42% of its production, which ranks 121th in college football. It could be a long day in Chapel Hill for Orange head coach Dino Babers.
LA-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns at Iowa State Cyclones
Odds: Cyclones -11.5, over/under 56.5
Iowa State comes into this season with a chance to have their fourth consecutive winning season for the first time since 1926!
The Cyclones have star quarterback Brock Purdy returning, and he is poised to break many school records in 2020. Iowa State was only 5-7-1 ATS last year and were 2-4 as home favorites. Lafayette is coming off a year in which they finished 11-3 and were one of the best teams in the country ATS spread, covering 64% of the time with a 9-5 record. Both teams return around 67% of production from last year and rank in the middle of the pack.
As far as the over/under is concerned, Iowa State covered 67% as the home favorite in 2019, and Lafayette also covered 67% of the time as the road team.
