Los Angeles Lakers vs. Portland Trail Blazers News and Notes

The slumping Los Angeles Lakers are in danger of falling into a play-in spot and may be without their two superstars when they meet the Trail Blazers in Portland on Friday night.

LeBron James’ status is already cemented as the King will miss his third straight game after re-aggravating that ankle injury in Sunday’s loss to Toronto.

Anthony Davis may join him after leaving the Lakers’ loss to the Clippers last night. Davis played just nine minutes before exiting with back and ankle issues. The former Pelican said he “should be good to go” after the 118-94 setback but being a back-to-back and with AD’s history of injury problems, LA may choose to hold him out.

Starting point guard Dennis Schroder will miss his fourth straight game due to health and safety protocols, so LA’s opening five could look very unfamiliar tonight.

The Lakers have dropped four of their past five and seven of nine games to get locked with Portland at 37-29. Whoever wins Friday will take the season series and own the playoff seeding tiebreaker as the loser falls to the seventh seed.

Portland has been anything but losers lately, winning five of six on an eastern road trip. The Blazers capped the trek with a dominant 141-105 performance in Cleveland on Wednesday.

Team-leading scorer Damian Lillard put up a game-high 32 points while adding nine assists. Jusuf Nurkic, who seems to be coming around after missing two and half months earlier this year, double-doubled for the third time in four games. The Blazers’ center had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high four blocks.

Now, after winning each game by double-digits on the trip, Portland returns home to play in front of their fans for the first time this season. The Blazers hope the presence of about 1,900 spectators can spark their rather mediocre 18-18 home record this season.

The Lakers have covered five straight in Portland, although both meetings this season were in LA. In their past 11 in Oregon, the over has been the play eight times while LA has covered nine of 13 overall head-to-heads. The Lakers have failed to cover in five straight road games while Portland comes in 5-1 against the spread in their past six and went over in each game.
