Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Detroit Red Wings News, Analysis, and Picks
The Detroit Red Wings climbed their way out of the Central Division cellar with a 1-0 shootout win over the Stanley Cup champion Lightning on Saturday. Detroit continued a recent string of success against Tampa, now having won three of their past four meetings with the champs.
Thomas Greiss earned his second straight shutout after blanking the Blue Jackets by the same score on Tuesday. Greiss stopped 33 Lightning shots in a game his team could only muster 15 on backup netminder Curtis McElhinney.
Saturday marked the third time these two teams have played to the under this season, while three of seven matchups have been decided by one goal.
The loss was a tough way to snap a four-game win streak for the Lightning, chasing Florida and Carolina atop the division. Tampa can pull even with the Panthers and two points back of the Hurricanes with a regulation win in the season-series finale with Detroit. The Lightning will still have a game in hand on Florida, but Carolina will have one game on TB after today.
Expect the Lightning to send out Vezina candidate Andrei Vasilevskiy out for the rematch while Detroit should counter with Jonathan Bernier on the second day of the back-to-back.
It’s just a matter of time before Tampa gets their sixth-ranked offense and fifth-ranked powerplay going against Detroit. The Red Wings are in the bottom ten of the league on the penalty kill and have scored the fewest goals in the NHL.
It’s hard to believe the Wings will get away with a second straight win after being more than doubled in shots on goal yesterday. Expect the Lightning to come out firing and make this one a very different showing on Sunday.
The Picks: Lightning Cover -1.5 (-125), Total Under 5.5 (-128), Ondrej Palat Over 0.5 Assists (+118)
