UEFA EURO 2020 Group C Analysis and Picks
The question of who is playing for the Netherlands is perhaps less important than who won’t be. Liverpool center-back Virgil Van Dyck’s serious knee injury derailed the title defense of Liverpool this past campaign. Liverpool’s inability to replace the world’s best center-back was painfully apparent as they drifted down the EPL table with the big man on the sidelines. Juventus central defender Matthijs de Ligt and Manchester Cutys Nathan Ake will be top candidates to fill the void, but it is a big ask for the young pairing.
Frankie de Jong of Barcelona and Liverpool’s Georgino Wijnaldum comprise part of an explosive yet defensively sound midfield and a more than capable attack featuring an in-form Memphis De Pay, who averaged better than a goal every other game for Lyon. The orange army will be hoping that the star-studded Dutch side can overcome rather conspicuous absences.
In a wide-open Group C, Ukraine will see this as a golden opportunity to reach the tournament’s knockout stage. Surprisingly, something never before achieved for this football-rich nation. Living legend and former Chelsea and AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko takes the helm as manager for the first time at a major tournament.
Whether or not the famed striker can translate a remarkable playing career into a successful managerial one is the question of the day. The tightly knit and disciplined Ukraine side features a whopping nine players from Shaktar Donetsk, including their entire backline. Oleksander Zinchenko has been a surprising success at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage and will be eager to showcase his world-beating talent on the big stage.
Austria (+550) and North Macedonia (+2600)
Austria faces Northern Macedonia in their respective openers at the tournament. Providing the fixture doesn’t result in a draw, we will witness one of these teams win their first match at the European championships.
Northern Macedonia will be brimming with confidence, having dispatched a powerful German side in world cup qualifiers this past March. Austria, having finished ahead of the Macedonians in group G, defeated them twice during qualifiers. Regardless of absences in the Dutch lineup, or recent unlikely upsets, these two teams will see the opener as their best chance to win their first match at Euros.
The Pick: Ukraine +470: Ukraine won their qualifying group in near-perfect fashion, boasting an undefeated record and topping a group that included Portugal and Serbia. Add the winning ways of Andriy Shevchenko, and you have a recipe for Ukraine’s success this summer.
