Venetian Fined $7.2M for Lax Money Checks in Casino

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Pushing The Odds with Matt Perrault

Las Vegas Casinos Face Fines for Regulatory Violations

Last week, the Nevada Gaming Commission approved a significant $7.2 million fine against The Venetian, marking another chapter in a series of penalties involving high-profile casinos in Vegas. The unanimous vote favored the settlement, which originated from allegations that The Venetian allowed Matthew Boyer, a known bookmaker linked to handling $325 million in illegal sports wagers from Shohei Otani's interpreter, to gamble without adequately verifying the origins of his funds.

This isn't the first time Las Vegas properties have faced repercussions for regulatory oversights; other major casinos such as Caesar's, MGM Grand, Resorts World, and Wynn have received fines ranging from $5.5 million to $10.5 million for similar violations associated with Matthew Boyer's activities. Boyer has been a guest on our show and expressed a lack of remorse over his actions, stating the responsibility lies with the casinos for not diligently enquiring into the source of the bets placed at their facilities.

Aside from the hefty fine, The Venetian is now required to implement a comprehensive anti-money laundering training program, appoint a dedicated overseer for the program, and undergo a thorough review by the Nevada Gaming Commission to ensure the new measures are effectively integrated. This case highlights the ongoing challenges within the gambling industry concerning adherence to regulatory standards and the impact of neglecting due diligence on the part of casino operators.
