Cameron Young On Switching Ball Before 2025 Wyndham Championship

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Smylie Kaufman Show

Golf Ball Switch at the 2025 Wyndham Championship

Throughout the 2025 season, a significant improvement was observed culminating at the Wyndham Championship. A key change that week was switching to a new golf ball. This change was highlighted as having a substantial impact on performance, particularly noted in the context of ball striking and enhanced control over the golf ball's behavior during play.

The new golf ball allowed for better management of distance and spin. Specifically, the ability to play tight draws and achieve precise distance with irons was enhanced. Remarkably, this golf ball exhibited excellent performance on par 3s, where every approach notably resulted in a score of two.

The player described a habitual challenge with high spin rates, especially when hitting down on the ball, which previously resulted in difficulties in managing back pin positions on softer greens. With the new golf ball, it was possible to land the ball closer to the back pins without the usual drawback of the ball ripping back, even when using a gap wedge. This characteristic was attributed to the golf ball's performance where it peaked in its flight and then descended sharply, rather than continuing to rise, thus providing better placement and less backward spin.

Although not completely sure of the scientific details underlying these improvements, the switch clearly aligned well with the conditions at Sedgefield, characterized by its sloped, fast, yet not overly firm greens. This strategic change was pivotal in overcoming the challenges posed by the course layout and conditions.
