Mid-Season Promotions Could Create Compelling New Storylines
There is a path for players to earn mid-season promotions by winning a certain number of times, although the exact requirement may not have been disclosed. Mid-season promotions would bring fresh talent into the Championship Series and create additional storylines.
Ben Coles provides a strong example. After playing well on the Corn Fairy Tour, he moved inside the top 100 through his performances on sponsors’ invitations and a strong summer of golf.
One possibility would be to promote the top Challenger Series player midway through the season. If that player were already secure for the following year, he could begin the second half of the season in the Championship Series with zero points and attempt to qualify for the playoffs.
Because Challenger Series and Championship Series points would operate on different scales and could not be transferred between the two, reaching the playoffs would be extremely difficult. However, a promoted player accomplishing it would create a compelling storyline.
The PGA Tour accelerated program sending players directly to the Challenger Series is also a concern. A player who earns accelerated status has completed the process faster than someone who waits the full four years, and that achievement should be reflected in the category he receives.
One potential approach would be to place an accelerated player into the Championship Series midway through the season with zero points. He could try to reach the playoffs, land in the fall’s last-chance category, return to the Challenger Series the following season, or win an event and potentially secure his card for the next year.
Each outcome could benefit the PGA Tour and add meaning to the fall events. Given the talent of the players qualifying through the accelerated category, the current approach should still be reconsidered while there is time to change it.
