Wyndham Clark Discusses his Swing Evolution & Confidence Surge

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Smylie Kaufman Show

Exploring Game Improvement and Equipment Adjustments

In a recent episode of the show, a top golfer revealed his impressive swing evolution and experimentation with various club setups that led to his improved performance in recent seasons. Reflecting on his journey, he discussed the decision to go without a swing coach by the end of 2022—a change that led to significant self-improvement in his game for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Despite facing challenges with his ball striking towards the end of 2024 and a particularly rough 2025 season, this shift allowed him to own his swing and focus more on playing golf rather than perfecting his golf swing mechanics.

His transition was aided by a new coach, Pat, who helped him revisit the strengths of his 2023 swing and further refine his technique. They aimed for a shorter swing with more width to improve timing, which significantly increased his confidence, particularly with his irons. Although adjusting to the driver was challenging, the new approach substantially enhanced his iron play.

Alongside these technical adjustments, his diverse shot-making capabilities have expanded. Previously known for predominantly fading his shots with irons, he now successfully integrates draws and more varied cuts into his game. This versatility was evident as his strokes-gained approach statistics improved dramatically, with a notable performance in two consecutive tournaments where he ranked number one in approach shots.

The conversation also delved into his rigorous journey with putter adjustments. From initially using a putter with added lead tape, he explored various other models and modifications over the following years. These changes included different grips and custom setups, transitioning through several types—from the lab DF3 to a Ping Scottsdale Tech Allied Blue onset. Notably, this ongoing experimentation culminated in a win at the Byron Nelson tournament with the onset putter. Despite the many iterations, this golfer highlighted the importance of the onset feature and a longer, counterbalanced setup that mimics his original preferences while incorporating advanced technology for optimal alignment and feel.

Overall, the discussion underscored the significant impact of both swing mechanics and equipment optimization in achieving peak performance levels in professional golf.
