Alexander Volkov’s Title Case and Crucial Clinch Battle
Alexander Volkov was unhappy that Josh Hokitt was fast-tracked to a title fight, but Volkov may need to do more—and do it in a more entertaining fashion—to earn the same opportunity. With limited depth in the heavyweight division, however, Volkov remains in contention. If he keeps winning, a title fight should eventually follow.
Volkov also has reason to be frustrated about his second fight with Gane. The view expressed here is that Volkov controlled a competitive contest and deserved the decision. The commentators appeared to think Volkov had won, while Gane’s reaction also suggested that he expected the decision to go against him.
That result prevented Volkov from extending what could have been a significant winning streak. Instead, Gane received the split-decision victory, kept his streak alive and moved into a championship position. Volkov therefore has a legitimate claim to a title opportunity of his own.
Volkov is one of the biggest fighters in MMA, regularly holding advantages in height, reach and length. His upcoming matchup features two fighters who are highly effective in the clinch, making control in that area a likely deciding factor.
At 37, Volkov appears to be reaching his peak despite having already spent considerable time in the sport. He has won many UFC fights, with his loss to Tom Aspinall and the disputed Gane decision standing out among his recent results. A victory here could put him in position to face the winner of the upcoming title fight.
Oddsmakers have Volkov at -125, reflecting how competitive the matchup is expected to be. Rizvan has also shown himself to be a strong fighter since joining the UFC. He lost his debut to Curtis Blaydes, although that decision was close enough to leave doubts when the scorecards were read.
Rizvan may hold the grappling advantage and could choose to pursue that route. Ultimately, though, the fight is expected to come down to the clinch. Volkov’s experience and proven ability in those exchanges make him the pick to have his hand raised.
