UFC Rankings Overhauled by AI: Emphasis on Entertainment Over Sport?
The UFC has officially adopted a new ranking system managed by AI, focusing on fighter activity and performance, a change they've been considering for years. Fighters will now be rated with a priority on recent activity and performance quality, with their rating decaying if they remain inactive for longer than eighteen months. The value of past victories will also diminish over time.
Raquel Pennington, for example, experienced a significant drop in her ranking, falling from 2nd to 15th place under this new system. This shift underscores the kind of dramatic changes that the AI-driven approach can bring.
Interestingly, fighters who achieve finishes in bouts will receive higher ratings, which pushes the notion that entertainment value is becoming a primary factor in rankings. This approach has drawn some criticism, with concerns that turning the sport into entertainment undermines its integrity. Comparatively, traditional sports do not prioritize entertainment factors in their rankings or outcomes.
The UFC claims that this new system, tested behind the scenes for a year, has provided more accurate predictions. They cited that historically, fighters ranked higher in media rankings have won 53.4% of matches when facing other top-15 fighters. In contrast, under the new AI system, the higher-ranked fighters have won 63.5% of such encounters.
This development in the UFC's ranking methodology opens a broader debate on the balance between entertainment and sport, the role of AI in sports, and how these factors impact the true essence of competitive integrity.
