Rested Bullpens and Strong Relief Pitching Point to a Low-Scoring Brewers-Rays Matchup
Nick Martinez is unlikely to face the Brewers’ lineup a third time, but Tampa Bay enters the game with a fully rested bullpen. Mizarrowski has also worked only 8 1/3 innings across two postseason starts, making him unlikely to pitch six or seven innings. He and Martinez could each be limited to around five innings.
The Brewers have trailed after allowing the first run six times this postseason and won five of those games. The rest of baseball is 7-22 in the same situation. Milwaukee has consistently found ways to come back, regardless of how its starting pitcher performs.
The key for the Brewers will be bridging the gap to their late-inning relievers. Uribe could pitch the sixth before Ashby handles multiple innings, with McGill available for the eighth and ninth. Milwaukee has already shown that it is willing to use McGill frequently, while Ashby offers the flexibility to cover two innings.
Tampa Bay’s price has climbed to around +165 or +170, but the Rays remain difficult to back tonight. Their better opportunity to win may come tomorrow.
The total is 6.5, and despite public support for the over, the matchup points toward fewer runs. Martinez may pitch only three or four innings before turning the game over to a rested bullpen. Milwaukee’s controlled environment has also produced considerable success for the Brewers.
Both teams are strong when protecting late leads. The Rays are 92-0 when leading after eight innings, making Baker a strong option to close the game in the ninth. McGill offers the Brewers a similar late-inning presence.
Home runs could determine whether the game goes over the total. Junior Camanro is Tampa Bay’s biggest home run threat, but he has not hit many during the postseason. He is 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against Mizarrowski after facing him on opening day.
More offense could emerge when the series shifts to Saint Petersburg, especially after the top starters work through Games 1 and 2. For tonight and tomorrow, however, reaching eight or nine total runs appears unlikely.
Milwaukee’s extended time off could also create some rust. The preferred play is the first five innings under 3.5 runs, with a possible pairing involving the Brewers leading after five innings.
