Field of Dreams Game Viewership Falls Short on Netflix

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Challenges of Streaming Baseball: Netflix's Viewership Struggles

The recent Field of Dreams game, streamed exclusively on Netflix, has highlighted the streaming platform’s challenges in attracting large viewerships for baseball games. Despite the nostalgia and allure typically associated with this special game event, Netflix only managed to draw 1.6 million viewers. This figure is considerably lower compared to the nearly 6 million viewers for the 2021 game involving the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

The selection of teams such as the Minnesota Twins for this year’s game appears to have impacted viewer interest negatively. Moreover, being a platform primarily known for movies and series, Netflix's approach to sports broadcasting is relatively new. The requirement of a subscription, costing around $20 for those who wish solely to watch the game, likely deterred potential viewers. Non-subscribers, confronted with the immediate expense, may have opted to skip the subscription, especially if their interest was limited to a single event.

Competition from other streaming services that offer sports content as a part of more affordable packages, or even for free as part of certain satellite or cable TV packages, further complicates Netflix's position in the sports broadcasting arena. For example, Amazon Prime has established itself as a substantial platform for streaming sports, hosting a variety of games including those from major leagues.

As Major League Baseball (MLB) contemplates a new collective bargaining agreement and the potential centralization of rights fees, the future landscape of sports streaming could see considerable changes. The league might prefer consolidating broadcasts under fewer umbrellas, potentially similar to traditional networks or larger, more sports-focused streaming platforms. This restructuring could significantly impact platforms like Netflix, which are still taking initial steps in the sports streaming market.

Lastly, comparing other events, such as last year’s Speedway Classic which also had low viewership due to rain delays, and traditional broadcasts like the Yankee Giants game and the Home Run Derby on Netflix, suggests that MLB has broader issues to address in terms of broadcasting strategy to reach optimal viewership numbers.
