Rays Even the Series With a 3-1 Win Over Cleveland
The Tampa Bay Rays bounced back with a strong effort, defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 to tie the series before the next three games in Cleveland. Baker closed out a game that featured strong pitching, some costly defensive mistakes by the Guardians, and timely hits from the Rays.
Tampa Bay is now 89-0 when leading after eight innings, including the postseason. Nothing from the opening two games has changed the prediction that the Rays will win the series, but Cleveland is unlikely to make it easy.
The matchup could go seven games, with low-scoring results such as 3-1, 2-1, or 4-2. While that style may not appeal to everyone, both teams rely on moving runners, excellent pitching, and closing out tight games.
Tampa Bay could easily win the next two games, but Cleveland has repeatedly shown an ability to respond when it appears to be finished. The Guardians came back after falling behind 0-2 against the White Sox, and the organization continues to produce sustained success, reach the playoffs, and upset teams despite receiving little credit at the beginning of the year.
Jose Ramirez could get hot again, Juan could deliver a couple of hits, and something unexpected could shift one of the remaining games. Outside of Rasmussen, the Rays do not have a guaranteed win. Rasmussen could take his next game, while Gavin Williams could answer with a victory for Cleveland.
The expectation remains that Tampa Bay will ultimately win the series, but the teams may still be preparing for a decisive Game 7.
