Seattle, Houston and Anaheim Offer Intriguing Baseball Opportunities
Bob considers the Seattle Mariners manager position the best current opening. The team has plenty of talent but has underachieved, making the job more attractive than the openings in Houston and Anaheim.
The Houston Astros job is also intriguing, although high-priced contracts could require the organization to move players. Bob would like to see former Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo get the job, while noting that the team is speaking with several candidates, including people with analytical backgrounds.
For the Astros manager position, Bob would not be surprised if Brad Ausmus emerged as a candidate. Ausmus is close with Jeff Bagwell, who has the trust of owner Jim Crane, and currently serves as Boone’s bench coach in New York.
The Angels general manager opening could also be lucrative because the new ownership group is willing to spend money. Outside of Mike Trout, the team does not have any major contracts on the books, giving the next general manager an open canvas. However, rebuilding the organization could take several years.
Stan Kroenke’s group has won titles at multiple levels, including a premier title, an MLS title, a Super Bowl and a Stanley Cup. That track record could make the Angels job more appealing, even though the team will remain second to the Dodgers in the local market.
The organization also needs infrastructure improvements, including a new stadium and spring training headquarters. If Kroenke invests as he has with his other franchises, the opportunity could become very lucrative.
