Las Vegas Expansion: Billions at Stake and a New Arena on the Horizon
It has been identified who might be in the running for the Las Vegas NBA expansion franchise, expected to cost between $12 billion and $13 billion. A significant element of this development is the requirement for a new stadium in Las Vegas, despite existing facilities like the T-Mobile Arena, which is currently home to the Vegas Golden Knights and used by the UFC.
Bill Foley, owner of the Vegas Golden Knights and the T-Mobile Arena, has indicated a preference for not sharing the existing arena with the NBA, highlighting that the Golden Knights would get the first choice of scheduling dates. This stance is problematic for the NBA, which expects prime scheduling as a standard practice across its venues. Consequently, the push for a new arena is driven by the need to accommodate the NBA's scheduling preferences.
Although Las Vegas already boasts several large venues, including Allegiant Stadium and other MGM properties, the plan includes constructing a new 20,000 seat basketball arena. This is in addition to the upcoming baseball stadium, hinting at a significant expansion of sports facilities in the city. Despite these grand plans, the necessity and practicality of another new arena in Las Vegas remain contentious topics among local sports and business communities.
