Improving College Basketball Conference Performance

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo
Progress and Prospects in College Basketball and Conference Expansion
Reflecting on the progress made this year, it's evident there's room for improvement in our league, especially in college basketball. A notable observation is from my first year, where Memphis maintained a top 15 national ranking and faced tough out-of-conference opponents, showcasing the competitive spirit expected in our league. However, the challenge lies in the autonomy conferences, which are increasingly reluctant to schedule games against us. This hesitance necessitates a strategic response from our members to elevate the league's profile by scheduling more aggressive games outside the conference.
In response to these challenges, we implemented new scheduling parameters in my second year, ensuring that top-tier teams within the league play each other more frequently. We are also planning collaborative events with other conferences, an initiative aimed at fostering a more competitive middle and top tier within our league. While these improvements don't materialize overnight, we've seen significant progress, evidenced by the rise of teams like USF, which has become more competitive due, in part, to excellent coaching and increased investment.
Looking ahead, the excitement surrounding college basketball in Tampa is timely, coinciding with our decision to host the tournament there for the next two years. This move is expected to bolster local interest and support for the league.
Expanding on the topic of the American Conference's growth strategy, we are continually in an offensive mode, actively seeking opportunities to enhance both our television presence and performance in key sports like basketball and football. Rise Ventures, a wholly-owned commercial venture within the league, exemplifies our proactive approach to commercial expansion and financial sustainability.
Regarding potential expansion, our approach is strategically aggressive. Drawing from my experience at Rutgers and the transition into the Big 10, the paradigm of conference expansion has shifted from merely increasing value to strategically positioning institutions akin to franchise acquisitions in the professional leagues. We're open to exploring all opportunities, ensuring that any expansion does not dilute the financial integrity or competitive balance of the league. Maintaining open communication and considering all potential partners are crucial as we navigate these possibilities.
