You’re probably lying if you saw the Buckeyes making a run to the national championship game after Michigan man-handled them in the trenches on the last day of the regular season. It’s no secret that the Buckeyes went into the year with two main goals: the first was to beat Michigan, and the second was to win a national championship. Although the first didn’t come to fruition, the Buckeyes have an excellent shot at making good on the second part. The Buckeyes have steamrolled through the first three rounds of the CFP, knocking off Tennessee, Oregon, and Texas by a combined 111-52 margin. 

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can say something similar about Notre Dame after their early season loss to Northern Illinois. No one thought they’d be here, but here they are after taking down Indiana, Georgia, and Penn State. I think Notre Dame’s downfall in the national championship will be their inability to win battles downfield on offense. Ohio State has a lockdown secondary and a top defensive line. It will be difficult for the Fighting Irish to create offense in this matchup, which gives me a strong lean toward the Buckeyes covering the number and winning the natty by double-digits. There are too many weapons for the Buckeyes on offense, and their defense will put them over the top as the winners of the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

Ohio State vs Notre Dame Best Bet Total: UNDER 46.5 (-114)

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Buckeyes hit the 30-point mark in this matchup, but it would surprise me if the Fighting Irish scored 15 points. Maybe I’m not giving enough credit to Notre Dame’s defense, but I have a hard time believing Ohio State can do what they did to some of the top teams in the country and not group the Fighting Irish into that pack. Even if I’m being slightly lofty in projecting Ohio State to score 30, they could land in the mid-20s and still cover the spread. If Notre Dame starts slow, it will only make the idea of an Ohio State blowout even more likely. I like for the number to fall under, even with the Buckeyes’ talent on offense.
