BYU-UCF Betting Lean and Utah-Houston Over Pick Analysis

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From SportsGrid College Football Today

UCF Draws a Cautious Lean Against BYU, While Utah-Houston Points to the Over

BYU is a seven-point favorite against UCF, but this game did not make the betting card. UCF is the lean at 7.5 points, though not strongly enough to justify putting actual money on it.

The case for UCF is largely narrative-driven. BYU is coming off a major game against Notre Dame and must travel across the country for an early kickoff at UCF. That creates the possibility of BYU starting slowly after an emotional win.

However, BYU has not failed to cover a spread this season. The market often bets against the Cougars, but that can make it difficult to get a good price against them. Even after the number moved from 6.5 to the desired 7.5, it was still difficult to back UCF confidently.

UCF also has quarterback concerns after its starter was injured against Pitt in Week 3. The Knights have kept games close against Houston and Pitt and defeated TCU, but BYU continues to find ways to win.

BYU also knows the importance of this conference game. The Notre Dame result helped move the Cougars up in the polls, but it did not affect their Big 12 title chances. A 27-20 BYU victory requiring a fourth-quarter score would not be surprising. UCF was the selection in a pool requiring a pick against the spread, but the Knights remain only a lean.

Utah-Houston qualifies as a “four-outcome game,” with plausible arguments for either side and both the over and under. Utah is at home and favored by less than a touchdown, while Houston has frequently found ways to stay competitive against the number. The conflicting possibilities initially made the game difficult to bet.

Of the four outcomes, however, the over at 56.5 made the card. Utah averages 40 points per game, while Houston scores just under 40. Both offenses rank in the top 10 in yardage and yards per play.

Houston’s pass defense creates a favorable matchup for Utah. It ranks 115th nationally in EPA per pass and 111th in overall EPA. Utah has also been finishing drives well, while both teams possess explosive offenses and Houston’s defense remains questionable.

The official play is over 56.5 in Utah-Houston.
