Florida to Start 19-Year-Old Tramell Jones Jr. Against Texas

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Florida Turns to 19-Year-Old Quarterback Against Texas

The University of Florida is making a quarterback change, with 19-year-old Jones set to make his first collegiate start against Texas. The four-star recruit from Jacksonville will become one of the youngest starting quarterbacks in the program’s history. The move comes with Aaron Fio injured.

Jones and Fio competed closely for the starting job throughout the spring and August before head coach Summerall ultimately chose Fio. Because the competition was so close, Jones enters the lineup with a legitimate opportunity to retain the job if he plays well, helps Florida end its two-game losing streak and wins over the locker room.

Florida has talented players at wide receiver, including Vernon and Wilson, but Fio has struggled to consistently connect with them. The Gators also need to improve their running game and get Jaden Baugh going against Texas. Jones can contribute as a runner, potentially giving the offense a different look.

The conditions in Austin could also be a factor, with winds expected to reach 20 miles per hour around kickoff. Florida may benefit from leaving the pressure of the Swamp after consecutive home losses and embracing the role of the road team.

However, Florida’s problems extend beyond quarterback. The defense has struggled to stop opponents, including Missouri and South Carolina. Even in the win over Mississippi, the Gators allowed the game to remain close until the end. If Arch Manning throws for 300 yards and Texas scores five touchdowns, Florida’s quarterback play may not matter.

A third loss would effectively eliminate Florida from SEC championship and College Football Playoff contention. A victory over Texas, however, would keep the Gators relevant and could give them a chance to return to the Top 25 with another significant win later against Georgia or Florida State.
