Ole Miss vs. Texas: Arch Manning, Sark Face Pressure

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From SportsGrid College Football Today

Texas Faces Ole Miss With Pressure Mounting on Arch Manning and Sark

Ole Miss against Texas stands out as the biggest game on the slate. The stakes extend beyond the playoff picture, with questions surrounding Texas football, Sark’s job security and Arch Manning’s future.

Manning could be benched in this game. If that happens, the possibility of him playing college football elsewhere next year would be firmly on the table. Ole Miss enters as the seventh-ranked team, but despite taking the country by storm before losing to Florida, the Rebels have largely fallen out of the conversation.

The blame game in Austin has become a major storyline. Texas is a massive program with a high-profile coach who has reached two semifinals but is still viewed as having underachieved. Manning carries similar expectations because of his name and the attention that has followed him.

Texas and Manning have both underachieved. Manning entered the past two years as the consensus favorite to become the No. 1 pick and win the Heisman Trophy, but neither possibility is currently generating the same discussion. When a team and its quarterback fall short of expectations, finger-pointing is inevitable. Ultimately, the only answer is to win games.

Manning has not produced consistently enough to resemble the quarterback many expected him to become. If he is benched against Ole Miss, the Florida loss may be the game that truly changed his trajectory, although the Oklahoma game could also be part of that discussion.

There have still been flashes of Manning’s talent. His 62-yard touchdown throw against Florida showed why people continue to believe in his tools. However, that performance also included troubling mistakes. On one second-down pass, two Florida defenders collided while trying to make an interception. Texas later failed on fourth-and-one and gave Florida the ball.

Florida controlled the game from the second quarter onward. Texas benefited from a punt-return touchdown, while Florida struggled in the first quarter, but the overall performance was not what was expected from Texas with Manning on the field and talented players surrounding him.

Manning’s future is complicated. Sportsbooks have repeatedly listed him among the favorites to be selected first overall, while the Manning family has continued to indicate that he would return to school. He may not want to remain in college if that requires transferring, and it is unclear what kind of program would pursue him or how NIL considerations would shape that decision.

The evaluation remains divided between impressive throws and costly mistakes. Based on what Manning has shown, the segment’s conclusion was clear: he has not yet demonstrated that selecting him as a franchise quarterback would be the right move.
