Chargers vs. Cowboys Best Bet ATS: Cowboys -3.5 (-115)
Both teams are primarily focused on making it to the regular season healthy, resting their starters and key reserves. Cowboys star QB Dak Prescott is expected to call plays for head coach Mike McCarthy. Meanwhile, the Chargers are 0-2 this preseason, averaging 6.0 points per game on offense. Given LA’s struggles on that side of the ball, I’ll roll with the Cowboys at home to cover.
Chargers vs. Cowboys Best Bet Total: Under 33.5
The Chargers have yet to find the endzone in their two preseason games, though that’s more indicative of their depth than their 2024 prospects. On the other side, Dallas’ defense has been sharp, allowing just 12.5 points per game. While Trey Lance and the Cowboys’ offense should put up some points, LA’s offensive woes make the under an appealing bet.
Cowboys Offensive Player To Watch: QB Trey Lance
After a quiet debut, Lance improved last week against the Raiders, completing 15-of-23 passes for 151 yards, a touchdown, seven rushes for 34 yards, and an additional score. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Lance will have a spot on the 53-man roster, but his role—backup or No. 3 QB—remains unclear. Saturday provides another crucial opportunity for Lance to make his case.
Cowboys Defensive Player to Watch: DT Mazi Smith
An allergic reaction sidelined Smith last week, but the 2023 first-rounder is looking to bounce back after a tough rookie season. Although he likely won’t play many snaps, a few solid reps could build his confidence heading into the regular season.
Chargers Offensive Player to Watch: QB’s Easton Stick and Luis Perez
The Chargers released QB Max Duggan on Monday, narrowing the battle for the No. 2 spot behind Justin Herbert to Easton Stick and Luis Perez. Stick and Perez have struggled in preseason action, combining for 255 yards on 23-of-58 passing with two interceptions. Expect each QB to get a half in their final audition.
Chargers Defensive Player to Watch: DE Tre’mon Morris-Brash
It’s a crucial week for Tre’mon Morris-Brash, the undrafted rookie vying for a spot as the Chargers’ fifth edge rusher. He’s earned praise from defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, and with 2021 fourth-round pick Chris Rumph II sidelined in a walking boot, a strong performance could secure Morris-Brash a place on the final roster.
