Unusually Short Line Raises Concerns for 49ers Against Falcons
The San Francisco 49ers enter their matchup with the Atlanta Falcons as 2.5-point favorites, creating one of the strangest lines of the week. San Francisco has consistently dominated opponents and covered spreads, yet the line has remained short while money has seemingly come in on Atlanta. The total is 50.5.
Based solely on the line, there is an argument for taking the Falcons. San Francisco was expected to be favored by at least 3.5 or 4.5 points. Atlanta has not been good, but it is at home and getting a short number. That makes it difficult to back the 49ers with confidence this week.
The line could be signaling a trap or letdown game, particularly given San Francisco’s injuries. With Mike Evans and DeShaun Stribling unavailable, the remaining options include Brandon Cooks, Watson, and Christian Kirk.
Those circumstances could create a heavy workload for George Kittle and CMC. Kittle’s receiving-yard prop is around 69.5, while his anytime touchdown price is near +115 in most markets.
The 49ers still have the superior roster and coaching staff, so they should be capable of winning by three points. However, the 2.5-point spread suggests the game could remain close, and it would not be surprising to see Atlanta hold a lead at some point.
San Francisco should ultimately pull out the victory, but the short line creates understandable concern. Atlanta has been searching for a home win and could catch an injured 49ers team sleeping, even if that outcome appears unlikely.
