Bears Win Thriller as Caleb Williams Outduels Drake Maye

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Bears Earn a Big Win as Caleb Williams and Drake May Put on a Show

The Bears delivered a big-time win in a back-and-forth game featuring strong performances from Caleb Williams and Drake May. May completed 24 of 31 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams went 22 of 33 for 308 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams has been sensational over the past two weeks, and his latest performance strengthened the argument for placing the Bears among the top teams in the NFC. Ben Johnson also stood out as both quarterbacks traded plays throughout the game.

Johnson praised May as an outstanding player who is difficult to contain. Even when the defense rushes four, May can find an open running lane or connect on short outlets that create catch-and-run opportunities. Johnson said May appears to have found his rhythm at this point in the season.

Johnson was also pleased with Williams’ performance during a short week. He explained that he feels more comfortable as a play caller after a full week of practice because it allows the offense to work through each play. Despite the limited preparation time, he thought Williams did a great job finding open receivers.

Williams remained measured when discussing the Bears’ 5-2 start. He said the team is in a good spot but emphasized that it is a long season, with players going down and others returning from injuries. The extended period before the next game will give the Bears time to rest, study their next opponent and get where they need to be as a team.

Luther Burden also discussed his new nickname, “the problem child.” His explanation was simple: “When I get the ball, it’s going to be a problem.” Burden said he was happy to let his teammates choose the nickname after what may have been his best game as a Chicago Bear.

May played well overall and added 26 rushing yards, but one costly throw became a major turning point. He acknowledged that it was the type of play that can swing and impact a game, and he wished he could have it back. He credited the Bears for having a good plan on a short week and getting after his team.

May said his offense still had two opportunities to drive for a score and take the lead. Instead, penalties and inconsistent execution prevented the offense from moving the chains. He was particularly disappointed with a three-and-out following a missed field goal.

Mike Vrabel defended his quarterback, saying May competed, scrambled and found good places to go with the football. Although Vrabel knew May wanted the throw back, he said the quarterback would learn from it and added, “I’m glad he’s ours.”

The segment closed with criticism of another player’s explanation that defenses give him significant attention and try to take him away, creating opportunities for his teammates. While he said he must capitalize when his chances arrive, the response was direct: he needs to start making plays.
