Eagles’ Late Kickoff Decision and Trevor Lawrence’s Progress Examined
With eight seconds remaining against the Jaguars in London, Nick Sirianni’s Eagles kicked a field goal while Jacksonville had no timeouts. The Jaguars also had a backup long snapper, but kicker Cam Little had already made a 68-yard field goal and did not need much field position to create a potential game-winning opportunity.
The safest decision would have been to kick the ball through the end zone, placing it at the 30-yard line and preventing a return. With so little time remaining, Jacksonville’s chances of stopping the clock and moving into field-goal range would have been minimal.
However, the decision to allow a return was not the only problem. The Eagles still had an opportunity to cover the kickoff and make the play. The return was comparable to any other blown coverage or failure on the field. Philadelphia trusted its special teams to stop the return but failed to execute.
The discussion also turned to Trevor Lawrence, who threw for more than 330 yards despite Jacksonville’s lack of continuity in the game. Liam Coen’s influence has helped Lawrence look more decisive and quicker with the ball.
Jacksonville’s system appears to give Lawrence clear answers against specific coverages. Rather than forcing him to decipher everything after the snap, the offense creates openings and gives him a defined place to deliver the ball. Simplifying those decisions and preparing him within the system has paid off.
