Eagles’ Late-Game Collapse Raises Questions About Nick Sirianni’s Future
The Eagles could have used a squib kick and forced the Jaguars to make a play with eight seconds left. Instead, they kicked the ball deep because they were concerned about a lateral play or a quick pass followed by a timeout.
The biggest danger was a long kick return. On the broadcast, Jason Kelce initially agreed with making the Jaguars return the ball, but Abdullah broke free for a 53-yard return. That gave Cam Little an opportunity to attempt a 57-yard field goal, which was described as a chip shot for a kicker capable of making kicks from 70 yards.
If Abdullah had gained another five yards, the game would have been over. Several things had to fall into place for the Jaguars to win and the Eagles to lose, but the decision to allow a return amounted to coaching malpractice.
It was an awful week for head coaches, although there are always coordinators and other candidates waiting for opportunities. Brian Flores would likely receive immediate consideration for a head coaching job if he had not sued the NFL following what happened with the Dolphins. No NFL owner appears willing to hire him while that legal fight continues.
The Minnesota Vikings’ defense is playing at an incredible level, and that is why they are 5-0. Kevin O’Connell receives praise for that record, but Flores and the defense deserve the credit. An owner could decide to hire Flores anyway, but that outcome does not appear likely.
Sean McVay is unlikely to be fired, and the Rams are expected to turn things around. Dan Quinn, however, could be out at the end of the year.
In Philadelphia, fans and people around the market are quickly turning on Nick Sirianni and would like to see a change. If Sirianni becomes available during the next coaching carousel, he would likely be hired quickly. That possibility could make the Eagles cautious about firing him and changing head coaches.
Things are currently going badly in Philadelphia. The Eagles blew a 10-point second-half lead against the Rams and then lost in London in dramatic fashion. Back-to-back meltdowns are difficult to overcome in a demanding market.
With the Phillies finished, the Flyers not drawing the same attention and the Sixers yet to begin, the focus is entirely on the Eagles. Fans are angry and increasingly frustrated with Sirianni.
