Eagles vs. Cowboys: Defense Key to Staying Competitive

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Eagles Must Lean on Defense and Running Game Against Cowboys

The Eagles can keep tonight’s game close if their offense executes against a Cowboys defense that has not played well. Dallas entered the year with expectations for a high-caliber offense, but that unit has been inconsistent and has struggled over the past couple of games.

Philadelphia will need to rely on its defense. Vic Fangio could benefit from blitzing more often because Dak Prescott has struggled against pressure in recent weeks. The defense must keep the Eagles in the game and create short fields, especially with Tanner McKee as the backup and DeVonta Smith unavailable. Establishing the running game will also be an important part of the formula.

The offense’s repeated three-and-outs have taken a toll on the defense. Philadelphia leads the league in three-and-outs and is among the league’s top punting teams, forcing the defense to play too many snaps. When a unit is on the field for 75 or 80 plays, it becomes difficult to perform consistently at a high level.

That workload is especially challenging for Fangio’s defense, which depends on the defensive front generating pressure with four rushers. The line has not done that consistently, and the offense has provided little help by failing to sustain drives.

The investment in the defensive front has also raised expectations. Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis have not performed consistently enough, while Jonathan Gernard has struggled to make an impact. Gernard could play tonight, but his game-time decision status suggests he may again be limited by a snap count.

With Nolan Smith unavailable and Jalyx Hunt potentially returning from an injury, the Eagles need significant help on the edge. Carter has shown flashes, while Davis has been a disappointment at times. Regardless of the offense’s role in the defense’s heavy workload, the highly paid interior linemen are expected to carry the defensive front, and they have not done so consistently.
