Eagles Face Questions Over Jalen Hurts’ Medical Care and Their Public Response
The Eagles’ management of Jalen Hurts’ medical situation has raised significant questions, particularly about the organization’s public response. By sending head coach Nick Sirianni to address the Philadelphia media without sufficient answers, the team increased the scrutiny surrounding the situation.
Questions remain about how Hurts played with a blood clot and then flew home from London. While the medical decisions are best addressed by doctors, concerns about the level of precaution are valid. DeVonta Smith, for example, will miss the upcoming game as a precaution to prevent his hamstring injury from worsening. That makes the decision to let a star player participate while dealing with a blood clot even more difficult to understand.
The situation has become increasingly troubling for Philadelphia, and the organization’s public handling has made it worse. The fan base’s response could become evident when the owner is inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame at halftime.
It also appears more possible than ever that Hurts has played his final game with the Eagles, although it is too early to reach that conclusion. The situation could become a bigger factor in his future than his performance or contract if he has lost confidence or trust in the organization.
The ramifications may extend beyond Hurts. A situation involving a player’s medical care can affect the locker room and cause other players to question whether the organization is putting them first.
General manager Howie Roseman bears considerable responsibility for the team’s response. Although he would not personally make medical decisions, he should have addressed the media or made a member of the medical staff available to answer questions. Instead, Sirianni was placed at the podium without the information or authority needed to explain the circumstances.
That approach made it appear as though the organization was hiding behind its head coach and waiting for the story to disappear amid the NFL schedule. Philadelphia’s passionate fan base is unlikely to let that happen.
The handling also contrasts with former Eagles coach Andy Reid’s approach of bringing out the head of the medical team when medical situations need to be discussed. Given the seriousness of the questions surrounding Hurts, Roseman should have addressed the matter directly and provided answers about the player.
