Giants-Commanders Tie Raises Questions About Jayden Daniels’ Late-Game Awareness
The Giants and Commanders played another high-scoring game that went to overtime, even though it never should have reached that point. Neither team deserved to win, and the game ultimately ended in a tie.
Jayden Daniels drew criticism for taking a sack in a situation when he needed to avoid one. The coaches were likely telling him through the headset that he could not take a sack and could instead throw the ball away on second down. For a franchise quarterback expected to lead the team, the mistake was inexcusable.
Dan Quinn may publicly accept responsibility, but the quarterback must also shoulder some of the blame. This was not a third-string player forced into action because of injuries. Daniels is the franchise quarterback and should have understood the situation.
Some players appeared to indicate that Daniels was at fault without saying so directly. Social media clips suggested that he did not know the play, but the players’ comments did not fully support that conclusion. It seemed more likely that everyone was covering for one another.
The full story may eventually emerge, particularly if Washington misses the playoffs and Quinn is fired. Regardless of what Quinn told Daniels, the coach will face public accountability. However, a franchise quarterback is also expected to know what to do in that moment and cannot avoid responsibility for such a costly mistake.
