John Harbaugh and Brian Flores Stand Out in Early Coaching Discussion
John Harbaugh has earned significant praise after guiding the New York Giants to a 4-2-1 record while winning with three different starting quarterbacks. JJ McCarthy was not spectacular against the Texans, but he played with poise, avoided major mistakes, and benefited from a strong running game.
Harbaugh’s willingness to turn to McCarthy after Jameis Winston struggled against the Saints has paid off. The Giants now have the inside track to win the NFC East, an outcome few would have expected when Jackson Dark was injured.
Other notable coaching performances include former offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s work with the Cleveland Browns and Brian Flores’ impact as a coordinator with the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.
Flores’ defense has carried much of the load for Minnesota alongside its running game. Despite the departure of Jonathan Gernard, the unit has improved and continues to generate consistent pressure.
Flores should receive another opportunity to become a head coach. His lawsuit against the NFL could complicate his candidacy, but his track record of turning bottom-tier defenses into some of the league’s best makes him a natural option for a team seeking defensive improvement.
The Dallas Cowboys were cited as an example of a team that could benefit from Flores’ leadership. Their defense has struggled since Dan Quinn left, while the offense remains strong. Although Flores was not specifically predicted to become Dallas’ next coach, his ability to rebuild a defense could help a team with an established offense become a contender.
Flores is expected to receive another head-coaching opportunity eventually. The primary questions are when it will happen and whether ongoing litigation against the NFL will affect his chances.
