Josh Allen’s Elusiveness Creates Major Problems for Defenses
Josh Allen is reminiscent of former Baltimore Colts MVP Bert Jones, who tried to run over defenders. Jones was ahead of his time compared with today’s mobile quarterbacks, although he played in an era when defenders could hit quarterbacks without drawing flags.
Former Chicago Bears quarterback Bobby Douglass offered another comparison. The left-handed quarterback would tuck the ball, run and seek out contact. Allen does not look for collisions in the same way, but he is extremely elusive.
Buffalo’s offense creates major problems for opposing defenses. It is difficult to designate a spy who can keep Allen in the pocket and stay with him. Pass-rush lanes must be clearly defined because allowing him to escape around the edge or up the middle creates trouble.
This is the Josh Allen we have seen year after year. The larger conversation about him will begin near the end of the year and in the playoffs, when the focus turns to where he stands, how he is playing and what his performance looks like at that point.
