Seattle-Denver Matchup Puts Coaching Tension and First-Half Trends in Focus
Seattle’s Thursday night trip to Denver presents a fascinating chess match between two head coaches with a tense history. When Macdonald became Seattle’s head coach, he instructed his staff to search social media for training camp clips that might reveal what Sean Payton and Denver were running. Payton learned about the effort and accused Macdonald of cheating, prompting a threat of legal action in response.
The game is important for both teams, particularly with Seattle coming off a loss to the 49ers. Denver’s offense has also been difficult to trust, making the total of 40.5 challenging to approach from an over perspective.
Denver’s pattern has been consistent: the offense struggles through the first half before Bo Nix begins throwing the ball more effectively and the running game gets going after halftime. That trend makes Seattle in the first half an appealing play. Denver followed a similar script against Jacksonville, overcoming a poor start with a second-half comeback.
There are still questions surrounding Denver’s play calling. Sean Payton took over those duties from Davis Webb, but the offense had performed slightly better before the change. The current struggles have led to finger-pointing and a search for answers.
Seattle must also establish its running game. Asking Sam Darnold to drop back and throw 40 times would place too much pressure on an offense supported by a defense that is not what it was a year ago. Seattle also needs better health in the backfield and fewer costly mistakes, including turnovers near the end zone.
While Sunday and Monday night games have regularly produced high-scoring results, Thursday has traditionally been more favorable to unders. The previous Thursday night matchup between Dallas and Tampa Bay stayed well below its 48.5 total. Although other recent Thursday games have gone over, this Seattle-Denver matchup could bring back the lower-scoring Thursday trend.
