Angel City Nears First NWSL Playoffs as Race Heats Up

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From LatiNation Futbol Club

Angel City Nears First Playoff Berth as NWSL Race Enters Final Two Match Days

With two match days remaining in the NWSL regular season, most of the playoff picture has been decided. Few teams outside the current qualification zone still have a chance to advance, with the top eight moving directly into the playoffs.

The level of play continues to draw attention, with some of the highest attendance figures in NWSL history. Excitement is also building toward next summer’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil, where many of the league’s players could become tournament stars.

Angel City FC currently sits in fifth place and appears close to qualifying for the playoffs for the first time. After a difficult start to the season, the club produced an impressive late-season recovery and climbed the standings with only a few matches remaining.

A managerial change helped spark the turnaround. Angel City parted ways with Alex Strauss and appointed Norwegian interim coach Leif Smeru. Recent results include a 3-1 victory over Seattle Reign, a 3-0 win over Utah, a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit and an important draw against Gotham.

Angel City is not the only team to recover from a difficult start. Kansas City Current struggled through the opening portion of the season but has won consistently over its past 10 games. Its last five results include three consecutive wins, one draw and one loss.

Elsewhere, the Washington Spirit has slowed down after losing several recent matches, while San Diego Wave remains undefeated over its past five games. North Carolina Courage still has a chance to qualify by winning its final two matches, although reaching eighth place will be difficult.

Angel City closes the regular season with matches against Bay FC, which sits in 14th place, and Boston. Those fixtures could give the club an opportunity to secure a first playoff game at BMO Stadium.

Commercially, Angel City has attracted celebrity investors, substantial crowds and a strong cultural identity since its foundation. Its performances on the field have not always matched that success, but the team’s recent run suggests the football is beginning to match the club’s identity.
