Croatia's Rise Among FIFA Ranks: Top 20 Status Since 1998

Croatia's Rise Among FIFA Ranks: Top 20 Status Since 1998

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Football Nation

The Remarkable Rise and Consistency of Croatian Football

Croatia's football team has undergone a dynamic transformation since its official entry into FIFA rankings in 1994, where they began at 125th place, and surged to 4th in just four years. Their meteoric rise was fueled by impressive performances in Euro 96 and the 1998 World Cup in France. Since then, Croatia has consistently stayed within the top 20, establishing themselves as a formidable force in international football.

The modern Croatian team began taking shape in 1990, even while the country was still part of Yugoslavia. An early highlight of their play came during their first official match against the USA, where they debuted their now-iconic checkerboard jerseys. This was a precursor to their official recognition as an independent nation in 1992. Croatia's international debut was solidified by their qualifying for Euro 96, where they topped their group and made it to the quarterfinals, helped greatly by star player Davo Chouca.

Croatia’s performance in the 1998 World Cup truly marked their arrival on the world stage, with Chouca leading the team to a third-place finish. This success marked the end of what many consider Croatia’s first golden generation of football players. A second generation began to emerge during Euro 2008, featuring future stars like Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, under the guidance of coach Sladen Bilic.

The appointment of Zlatko Dali saw a resurgence in Croatian football, culminating in a historic run at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Here, Croatia, entering as the 20th-ranked team, stunned many by advancing to the finals, ultimately securing a silver medal. Their success continued despite a disappointing European tournament in 2020, due to COVID-19 upheaval, showing strong performances again in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, adding another bronze medal to their tally.

As key players like Modric and Perisic age, the challenge remains for Croatia to continue their success. Despite the absence of a third golden generation so far, the history and resilience of the Croatian football team suggest they will remain a competitive force in international football.
